The Theater Project and Spindleworks present “Searching,” June 20 and 21 at The Theater Project on School Street in Brunswick. Earl and Diane Black, Nancy Scott, Kim Christensen, Lloyd Whitcomb, Don Weatherbee and Al Miller make up the ensemble that has developed over a long time collaboration between the two well known arts organizations. “Searching” is the forth production of the ensemble.
“Searching” comprises choreographed pieces the group has been working on since the fall and improvisations around a park bench, directed by Miller and Weatherbee. Anne Miller (no relation to Al), classical oboist, and Brad Terry, jazz clarinetist, will collaborate with the ensemble, improvising musical accompaniment for some of the pieces.
“The ensemble’s ability to work together and develop new material has grown remarkably since we started this work a few years ago,” Miller said. He has been collaborating with Spindleworks since its inception over 35 years ago, and Weatherbee has been working with the ensemble for several years. “Don’s choreography is challenging and fun for all of us,” Miller added. “He has a great imagination and a good sense of how to challenge people with varied ability. I am no Baryshnikov!”
The commitment of all involved is clear: “Al and Don are incredibly dedicated, working often in a volunteer capacity.” Liz McGhee, Spindleworks program manager commented, “This year, we are pleased to have secured grant funding from the Alfred M. Senter Fund to allow us to properly compensate them for their work, and bring the finished piece to the community”.
